Headaches

Headache Treatment: A Manahawkin, NJ Chiropractor’s Perspective

The Underlying Cause of Most Headaches is Hardly Ever Found

Most of the time, the cause of most headaches goes unknown and are therefore treated with medications that only mask the headaches.  80% of headaches are caused by a condition of the spine known as subluxation - a misalignment of the spinal bones that causes stress and irritation to the nervous system.  A subluxation causes stress to either the spinal cord itself or the nerves that exit the spine.  When these nerves get stressed, the information traveling over them, from the brain into the body, gets blocked.

When you first get a subluxation, most likely, you don't feel it.  When it's left uncorrected, however, it creates inflammation in the nerve.  The nerves in the upper part of the neck send strength and energy up into your head, so when they become inflamed that causes headaches.

There are different causes of these spinal subluxations and they can start when you’re a little kid.  Trauma and stress from learning how to walk and falling down, learning how to ride a bike, sports injuries, poor posture, sitting at a computer all day, playing video games, all create stress on the spine that cause spinal bones to go out of alignment and put stress on your nervous system.

Even Though Headaches Are Very Common, They Are Certainly Not Normal

Headaches are signs that something is wrong with your body.  In fact, any symptom that you have is a way for your brain to alert you to an underlying health condition.  That's what we specialize in at Healing Hands of Manahawkin.  It's very important to find the root cause of the symptom and not keep covering it up with medication.  If we keep covering up the symptom, we allow the body to continue to break down and create disease.

What Happens at the First Visit to Healing Hands of Manahawkin, NJ?

In our office, we never take chances with anyone's health. We don't even accept every person that walks through the door as a patient.  We have to be absolutely sure that we can help the patient and be able to prove our results before we even start them for treatment.  Every new patient will have a very thorough consultation with a doctor who really listens. The patient will then have a digitalized posture check, palpation, range of motion check, and we’ll take digital x rays if they're needed.

X-rays are an essential part of the examination to determine the cause of a patient's condition. They help us to rule out any underlying medical conditions that we can't see from the outside and they confirm that the patient's condition is able to be corrected.

What Treatment Looks Like at Healing Hands of Manahawkin, NJ

If headaches are caused by misalignments in your neck or your spine, it won't get any better until they're addressed.

At Healing Hands of Manahawkin, a visit is very efficient.  You never have to wait, you walk right in.  We have implemented a system of care in our office that allows us to correct a patient's condition in a relatively short amount of time.  This system of care is a long term solution to a patient's health condition. This system of care allows us to customize a patient's program based on their condition, how they respond to the first week of care, and the lifestyle that they want to live.  It's what we do in our office that's so different from yoga, physical therapy, and even most other chiropractors that allows us to have a 95% percent success rate with the patients that we accept.  Your condition will dictate the type of services you need and that will determine what your actual office visit looks like.

                1. Specific Chiropractic Care in Manahawkin, NJ

The most important part of a visit, where the magic happens, is the chiropractic adjustment.   This is where all the healing happens.  By realigning the postural distortions, aligning the spine, we can relieve the damaging stress off of your nervous system to relax the nerves.  This brings down the inflammation and addresses some of the symptomatology, including the headaches.  The adjustment is very gentle, it is very safe, and it's extremely effective.

                2. Spinal Traction

We use cervical, thoracic, and lumbar traction to strengthen the spine, restore the structure, and send more energy into the body.  Decompression helps when we have patients with spinal discs that are compressed.  It's very important to relax the spine, increase spinal mobility, and take pressure off of the discs.  Decompression works amazingly in conjunction with chiropractic adjustments and spinal rehab exercises.

                3. Deep Tissue Laser

Deep Tissue Laser is amazing at reducing pain, which makes it a great tool for fighting headaches.  By drawing blood to an injured area, Laser decreases inflammation and speeds up the healing process in your joints, muscles, and ligaments.  Laser is very gentle, soothing, and warm, it doesn't hurt at all. In fact, it feels really, really good and relaxing.

                4. Massage Therapy

We have an awesome massage therapist in our office.  Massage therapy is a great addition to your chiropractic care.  It helps us to loosen up tight muscles and encourages proper movement in the spine.  It is especially effective for patients suffering from tension headaches or stress headaches.

What Causes Headaches?

80% of headaches are caused by a condition of the spine known as vertebral subluxation. Chiropractors specialize in the spine, the way that your dentist specializes in your teeth.  Your spine has a very important function of housing and protecting the spinal cord and the very delicate nerves that exit off of it.  Those nerves come off of the spinal cord like branches of a tree.

Throughout your lifetime different stresses like learning how to walk and falling down, learning how to ride a bicycle and falling, sporting injuries, car accidents, even poor posture while you're at your computer or playing video games can cause the spinal bones to shift out of alignment.  Chiropractors call that condition of the spine, vertebral subluxation.

Subluxations cause the spinal cord and the nerves that exit the spine to be tense and smashed.  When the nerves get tense, tight, and smashed, the information from your brain into your body slows down.  The spinal cord acts like an electrical wire.  Your brain controls every single function and organ in your body by sending electrical signals or electrical messages down your spinal cord and out your spine.  Subluxations block those messages that are traveling through that part of the nervous system.  If whatever organ, muscle, or body part at the end of that nerve doesn’t get full nerve supply, over time, it will become weak and not function properly which will create disease in the body.

Misalignments in the spine also cause the entire structure to become weak.  When the structure of the spine is weak, it loses its ability to hold up your body weight, which causes your posture to distort.  With a distorted posture the body begins to collapse forward, stretching the spinal cord even more and slowing energy from the brain into the body.  Subluxations are a lot like cavities in your teeth, you can't feel them, you don't even know that they're there. But when they're left uncorrected, the nerves become inflamed. That's what creates headaches.

If the nerves in the neck or the upper neck have been tight, tense or smashed, for a long period of time, the nerve will become inflamed, radiating inflammation and pain up into the head, forehead, eyes, and ears, causing the classic headache symptoms.  The problem is that by the time you feel pain the nerve is not only inflamed, but the energy traveling through the nerves is already slowed down.  That's what creates additional conditions, problems, and diseases in our body.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Can chiropractic care help my headaches even if I suffered with them my whole life?

It depends.  If your headaches are being caused by misalignment in your neck or your spine, then a thorough examination and thorough X-rays would help us to determine how correctable those conditions are.

2. When should I see a chiropractor?

You should see a chiropractor almost immediately. Typically, chiropractors are the last people that patients come to see, but it should be reversed.  A chiropractor should be seen first because 80% of most headaches are caused by a misalignment in your upper neck.  Also, most people don't know that chiropractors are considered to be primary care physicians. So if a patient has a problem that is outside of chiropractic or can't be handled through chiropractic treatment, we have the ability and the knowledge to refer them out to the proper physician for medical follow up.

3. Is chiropractic care effective for migraines?

Yes!  We have an excellent success record helping people who have migraines, even people who have suffered from migraines almost their entire lives.

4. Can you relieve my headaches without medication?

If upon examination and X-ray it's determined that your headaches are caused by misalignment in the spine and irritation to your nervous system, then yes!  As long as the problem hasn't been left uncorrected for too long the conditions are typically very correctable.

5. Is chiropractic care covered by my insurance?

We always recommend that patients bring their insurance card in with them for their initial visit. Our team will do a thorough insurance verification and then we will let the patient know exactly what their insurance will contribute toward their care in our office.  That way there are never any questions or guesswork.

6. Could my headaches be a sign of something more serious?

Yes, that's why in our office we do a complete consultation, taking a complete history, and we do a thorough examination.  In areas where we see postural distortions, we take X-rays to make sure that the root cause of the headaches are a misalignment of the spine and not a medical condition that would need to be treated by a medical professional.

7. Who is the best chiropractor Manahawkin, NJ to detect conditions of the spine that cause headaches?

You know the answer to that!  It's Healing Hands of Manahawkin and our awesome Rockstar team!
